How Much Does a Locksmith Cost at the Weekend?
This article covers costs and choosing a reliable locksmith. The right approach depends on the situation, the type of lock and whether there is an emergency or safety risk.
Which factors determine the price?
The price may depend on the type of lock, the door, the time, accessibility, the labour required and the materials. Opening a door is not automatically the same as replacing a lock.
- Note whether the door or car is open or closed.
- Take a photo of the lock, hardware or key if it is safe to do so.
- Do not use force, and do not drill or use glue without professional advice.
- Confirm whether you are the owner, tenant, property manager or driver.
Making clear arrangements
Before work begins, ask exactly what will be done, which costs including VAT apply, and whether materials or call-out charges are billed separately. Ask for an itemised invoice afterwards.
Also read the relevant Correct Locksmith service and ask about the work, choice of materials and total cost before work begins.
Checklist for your situation
- Describe the problem as precisely as possible.
- State the time and any damage.
- Ask whether repair is possible before replacement is proposed.
- Keep the invoice and check the description of the work.
Frequently asked question
Can I fix this myself?
A simple visual check or trying a spare key may sometimes be possible yourself. Stop as soon as you encounter resistance, damage or a safety risk. Professional help is wiser when you are locked out, the lock is defective or you are unsure about security.
