Police Secure Home Quality Mark and Locks

This article explains how to deal with lock and key problems safely and when professional help is advisable.

View the complete door

Good security consists of the combination of the cylinder, security escutcheon, lock case, door and frame. A certified cylinder works less effectively when it protrudes too far or the hardware does not provide sufficient protection.

• Note whether the door or car is open or closed.
• Take a photo of the lock, hardware or key if it is safe to do so.
• Do not use force, and do not drill or use glue without professional advice.
• Confirm whether you are the owner, tenant, property manager or driver.

Improving security in practice

Start with the weakest point. Check that the cylinder sits flush, the hardware is secure and the door locks properly into the frame. If in doubt, have the complete situation assessed.

Also read the relevant Correct Locksmith service and ask about the work, choice of materials and total cost before work begins.

Checklist for your situation

1. Describe the problem as precisely as possible.
2. State the time and any damage.
3. Ask whether repair is possible before replacement is proposed.
4. Keep the invoice and check the description of the work.

Frequently asked question

Can I fix this myself?

A simple visual check or trying a spare key may sometimes be possible yourself. Stop as soon as you encounter resistance, damage or a safety risk. Professional help is wiser when you are locked out, the lock is defective or you are unsure about security.
