Replacing Locks in a Rental Home

Replacing Locks in a Rental Home

This article covers locks, cylinders and key problems. The right approach depends on the situation, the type of lock and whether there is an emergency or safety risk.

Determining the cause

A key that turns heavily, a sticking door and a defective lock case can seem similar but do not always require the same solution. Test with an undamaged spare key and stop as soon as you feel resistance.

• Note whether the door or car is open or closed.
• Take a photo of the lock, hardware or key if it is safe to do so.
• Do not use force, and do not drill or use glue without professional advice.
• Confirm whether you are the owner, tenant, property manager or driver.

Repair or replace

Sometimes adjustment or a new cylinder is sufficient. Damage to the lock case, strike plate or multi-point lock may require another component. A targeted diagnosis prevents unnecessary replacement.

Also read the relevant Correct Locksmith service and ask about the work, choice of materials and total cost before work begins.

Checklist for your situation

1. Describe the problem as precisely as possible.
2. State the time and any damage.
3. Ask whether repair is possible before replacement is proposed.
4. Keep the invoice and check the description of the work.

Frequently asked question

Can I fix this myself?

A simple visual check or trying a spare key may sometimes be possible yourself. Stop as soon as you encounter resistance, damage or a safety risk. Professional help is wiser when you are locked out, the lock is defective or you are unsure about security.
