The door only closes when you lift the handle This article is about door locks and cylinders. The right approach depends on the situation, the type of lock and the circumstances. In this article, you will learn what to look out for and when professional assistance is advisable.
What is important?
Start with a safe inspection. Note the make or model, check whether the door or car is open or closed, and only take a photo if it is safe to do so. Do not force a key, lock hardware or mechanism. Additional damage can make repairs more difficult.
- Check the size, fit and direction of rotation.
- Look for wear, moisture, tension or visible damage.
- Ask which solution is needed before any work begins.
- Also ask about the total cost and the warranty on the work.
Which solution is right for your situation?
Sometimes adjusting, cleaning or replacing a small part is enough. In other situations, you may need a new cylinder, different hardware, a complete lock or a new car key. A professional first assesses the cause and then chooses the least invasive solution.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fix this myself?
A simple visual inspection can sometimes be done yourself. Stop as soon as you encounter resistance, damage or uncertainty. If you are locked out, have a faulty lock or a security problem, professional help is the safest choice.
Does the entire lock always need to be replaced?
No. Often, only the cylinder, hardware or individual component needs to be replaced. Have a professional determine which part is actually defective or inadequately secured first.
