What Should You Do If Your Spare Key Does Not Work?

This article covers lockouts and opening doors. The right approach depends on the situation, the type of lock and whether there is an emergency or safety risk.

First act safely

Check whether someone has a spare key and whether the door has merely slammed shut or is actually locked. Do not force the door with a card, screwdriver or other tool. If there is immediate danger inside, call 112.

• Note whether the door or car is open or closed.
• Take a photo of the lock, hardware or key if it is safe to do so.
• Do not use force, and do not drill or use glue without professional advice.
• Confirm whether you are the owner, tenant, property manager or driver.

When professional help is advisable

A technician first assesses the door, cylinder and locking mechanism. Sometimes the door can be opened without replacing the lock. In case of damage or wear, the technician will first discuss the options and price.

Also read the relevant Correct Locksmith service and ask about the work, choice of materials and total cost before work begins.

Checklist for your situation

1. Describe the problem as precisely as possible.
2. State the time and any damage.
3. Ask whether repair is possible before replacement is proposed.
4. Keep the invoice and check the description of the work.

Frequently asked question

Can I fix this myself?

A simple visual check or trying a spare key may sometimes be possible yourself. Stop as soon as you encounter resistance, damage or a safety risk. Professional help is wiser when you are locked out, the lock is defective or you are unsure about security.
