What Is a Rim Lock?
A rim lock is a lock case mounted on the inside of the door. Unlike a mortise lock, the case is visible on the door. Rim locks are mainly found in older homes and on specific front doors.
A rim lock is mounted on the inside of the door rather than fitted into the door leaf.
A rim lock can be a practical solution, provided it is suitable for the door and installed correctly.
When should it be replaced?
- The key turns heavily or remains stuck.
- The deadbolt does not move fully.
- Visible damage
- Security after losing a key
Not every modern cylinder lock fits
Een standaard profielcilinder of insteekslot is niet automatisch geschikt voor een oplegslot. Controleer de maat, bevestiging, draairichting en buitencilinder. Bij twijfel voorkomt een vakman onnodige gaten of schade aan de deur.

Frequently asked question
Can a rim lock be replaced with a mortise lock?
Sometimes, but the door and frame must be suitable. It is not a simple one-to-one replacement in every existing door.
